As a student in Denmark you will be playing an active role in your own learning process. You will attend lectures, participate in discussions, study independently and undertake projects – both on your own and with groups of peers. Evaluation will be an ongoing process, through oral and written exams

Danish higher education is characterized by its innovative teaching methods and informal learning environment that encourages students to express their views, work together and develop a critical mind.

A typical week of classes will consist of 10 hours instruction, and around 30 hours of preparation, self-study and project work. This, however, varies for the different degrees offered at the different types of higher education institutions in Denmark.

Solving problems
As a student in Denmark you will attend lectures, study independently and undertake projects – both on your own and with groups of peers. These projects will challenge you to be creative, use your initiative, and think freely. They will give you practice in working with others and using your newly aquired knowledge to solve complex problems.

An international student describes it this way: “I like that we work in groups. This means that you get to meet a lot of different people. And by the end of each semester you have met a lot of people that you get to know very well. I also like the close relationship between teachers and students. We call them by their first names and we work side-by-side.”

In addition to project work, Danish professors often have experience as working professionals, offering students an invaluable practical perspective. Moreover, many Danish educational institutions are partnered with local companies and public organisations for research purposes. Some programmes thus include the opportunity to gain vital work experience.

The Legatum Institute´s 2011 Prosperity Index points to Denmark as having the world’s strongest entrepreneurial climate in terms of citizens’ opportunity to realise new ideas and influence their lives, incomes and well being

According to the Legatum Institute, a strong entrepreneurial climate is one in which citizens can pursue new ideas and opportunities for improving their lives, leading to higher levels of income and wellbeing. Thus, when a country increases the likelihood that entrepreneurial activity will pay off, and when individuals experience the satisfaction that comes from earning their success, a society’s prosperity increases overall.

The Entrepreneurship & Opportunity sub-index measures countries’ performance in three areas: entrepreneurial environment, innovative activity, and access to opportunity. Such factors as low costs to starting a business and public perception of a good entrepreneurial environment are important to improving citizens’ economic prospects and their overall wellbeing.

The sub-index also assesses a country’s ability to commercialise innovation, as well as the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure that exists to enable productive commercial endeavours. Lastly, it captures elements of access to opportunity by tracking the unevenness of economic development across socioeconomic groups and whether or not citizens believe hard work pays off in the end.

Dānijas valdība piedāvā stipendijas dāņu valodas, kultūras un citām ar Dāniju saistītām studijām

Dānijas valdība piedāvā stipendijas maģistrantūras un doktorantūras apmaiņas studentiem, kā arī jaunajiem pētniekiem, kuri Dānijā vēlas studēt dāņu valodu, literatūru, kultūru vai kādu citu ar Dāniju saistītu mācību kursu. Dāņu valodas un kultūras studijām var pieteikties arī bakalaura pakāpes studenti, ja viņi pirms došanās uz Dāniju mācījušies dāņu valodu vismaz divus gadus.

Stipendijas paredzētas studijām 2011./2012.akadēmiskajā gadā. Latvijas studenti un pētnieki piedalās kopīgā konkursā ar citiem studentiem un pētniekiem no 23 valstīm.

Piezīme. Tie Latvijas studenti, kuri jau studē vai arī gatavojas studēt Dānijā ar nolūku iegūt grādu, nav uzskatāmi par apmaiņas studentiem un nevar pieteikties uz Dānijas valdības stipendiju.

Bakalaura pakāpes, maģistrantūras un doktorantūras studenti var pieteikties arī uz stipendijām dāņu valodas vasaras kursiem. Pieteikšanās termiņš – 2011. gada 28. marts.

Lai pieteiktos uz stipendiju dāņu valodas vasaras kursiem, jāaizpilda īpaša šiem kursiem paredzēta veidlapa, kas tiks publicēta Dānijas Starptautiskās izglītības aģentūras mājas lapā: http://en.iu.dk . Vasaras kursu veidlapas šajā linkā tiks publicētas 2011. gada janvāra vidū.

Equal Status according to Danish Rules

You may be given equal status according to danish rules

If you are a foreign citizen, you may be given equal status according to Danish rules and apply for Danish state educational support for a study programme in Denmark if you fulfil one of the following conditions:

The Danish Integration Act

You can be given equal status if you are covered by section 2, subsection 2 or 3 in the Danish Act on the Integration of Foreigners in Denmark (the Danish Integration Act).

You have come to Denmark together with your parents

You can be given equal status if you moved to Denmark together with your parents before you attained the age of 20. It is a condition that your family is still residing in Denmark – Denmark must be the place of permanent residence for you and your parents.

You are married to a Danish citizen

You can be given equal status if you have lived continuously in Denmark for at least two years immediately prior to the time of application and have at the same time been married to or lived with a Danish citizen as your registered partner for at least two years. It is a condition that you are still married or living in a registered partnership at the time of application.

You have been working

You can be given equal status if immediately before starting the study programme for which you are applying for state educational support you have lived in Denmark continuously for at least two years and have had at least 30 hours of paid work every week. Paid work means that, having a valid work permit, you have had either an ordinary job and received ordinary pay for the purposes of labour law, or have worked as a self-employed trader. An au pair stay is not regarded as paid work as you do not have a work permit as an au pair but only a residence permit for temporary residence as an au pair.

If you did not have paid work for an uninterrupted period or if you did not have paid work until immediately before starting the study programme, you may still be given equal status if the intermediate periods were:

of a total duration of not more than three months,
periods of unemployment registered with the Employment Service,
periods of a duration not exceeding three months used for adult vocational training, language school and similar educational activities,
periods of illness or
used for doing your national service

Periods of a total of one year are comparable with paid work if, in connection with birth or adoption, you have looked after your own child, according to the rules applicable on the labour market.

You have resided in Denmark

You may be given equal status if immediately before the time of application you have lived in Denmark continuously for at least five years and you did not reside in Denmark with the purpose of education.

You are from South Schleswig

You can be given equal status if you are a German citizen but belong to the Danish minority in South Schleswig. You must be able to document your affiliation with Denmark. You can do so e.g. by documenting attendance at the Duborg-Skolen in Flensborg.

Leaving Denmark

If you have been given equal status according to the Danish rules, please note that the equal status will lapse if you leave Denmark after 30 April 2006 for a continuous period of more than two years.

Danish youth drink most

“These are worrying figures,” says Board of Health Department Head Mia Fischermann, adding that the figures once again show that Danish youth has the unfortunate European drinking record.

“Young people in Northern Europe do not drink as often as young people in Southern Europe – but they drink more when they do drink,” she says.

“Danish youth differs from other northern European youth in that they drink more often – and when they do drink, they drink the most,” Fischermann adds.

Northern Jutland
The Board’s figures also show that teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 are admitted to emergency wards as a result of alcohol twice as often as the 20-29 age group, and much more than older groups.

Another table in the report shows that northern Jutlanders generally drink less than other Danes – but that the youngest from this area break the trend and are admitted as much as in other parts of the country.

“It seems that young people across the country have the same sort of drinking culture,” Fischermann says.

Drink most in Europe
Figures from a European report have previously shown that half of Danish 15 and 16 year olds said they had been drunk in the 30 days previous to being canvassed, a far higher proportion than young people in other European countries.

Legal age
Although alcohol consumption among young people appears to have fallen slightly, the government is preparing to raise the legal age at which young people can buy alcoholic beverages stronger than beer from 16 to 18 years of age.

But Liberal Party Prevention Spokeswoman Sophie Løhde says bans are not the way forward.

“We cannot ban ourselves out of every problem and we have to do something about this. I often hear people say that it’s the neighbour’s boy who drinks. But it can’t always be him,” she says.

“We have to do more to get young people and teachers to reflect more on what is acceptable at their High School parties,” she adds.

The Board of Health’s figures do show major differences between local council areas, with Oddsherred Council the area with most admissions.

“They call us the country bumpkin council, we have low employment and social problems. Many young people are apparently unable to get together and believe that they are good enough without drinking themselves silly. It seems that social competences have broken down,” says Oddsherred Council Abuse Consultant Jan Herforth.
