Become a highly skilled chemical and biotechnical analyst and be qualified to work in Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Environmental, Cosmetics, Food or microbiology industries.
The subject areas are chemistry, microbiology and laboratory technology. In the elective part of the programme you can specialise in a subject through an internship and a project.
Graduates of the programme will be qualified to work in control laboratories or research and development laboratories in the manufacturing sector, at universities and for other research institutions.
The duration of the programme is 5 semesters. The first 1½-year is spent at the academy. The last year consists in practical and theoretical work in a company. At the academy you will spend about half the time in the laboratories.
Typical areas of work include control laboratories, research and development laboratories both in the manufacturing sector, and at universities and other research institutes. The graduates are qualified for planning, managing and implementing analytical work and results within both chemical and biotechnological areas.

MODERN, WELL-EQUIPPED LABORATORIES
A large part of the teaching takes place in the laboratories. These are bright and accommodating rooms complete with all the tools that you will need during the programme – and that you will meet in your future career as a chemical and biotechnical analyst.
Teaching is mainly theme-orientated.
The themes include:
- chemical synthesis,
- chemical technology.
The programme consists of compulsory subjects (67 %) and an optional part (Specialisation 33 %).
Students will follow a series of different subjects:
- apparatus technique,
- laboratory technique,
- analysis methods ,
The specialisation consists of optional subjects, an internship and a main project.
The aim of the programme is to qualify the students to plan and carry out tasks of a technical/vocational nature in the laboratory area in connection with production, development, consultancy and control in the technical laboratories of companies in both the private and public sector.
COLLABORATION WITH COMPANIES
In the course of the programme, you will visit a number of companies where the knowledge you have gained at the Academy will be put into perspective in relation to the actual work in the industry.
Academy cooperate with many private companies and public institutions in order to ensure that the programme is up-to-date and that what you learn is relevant to what you will be doing in your work placement and in your job afterwards.
Teaching is diversified and offers an alternating mix of theory, laboratory work, project work, lectures, study visits and theme teaching.
The program is theory-based and job-oriented, i.e. it aims at qualifying students for solving practical problems on an analytical basis. Theory is constantly targeted towards practical application in the industry. The students work in teams both in the theoretical lessons and in the laboratory.
FOCUS ON TEAM-WORK
Theoretical teaching is team-based whereas laboratory work is performed both individually and in small groups. Both the teaching and the examination forms are primarily project organised, reflecting the work form you will encounter in your future job as a chemical and biotechnical analyst.
The focus is both on the subjects and the students` ability to work together to solve problems. The teachers act as consultants for the teams.
The students must be active in the lessons, the project work and the consultancies with the teachers.
AUTHENTIC STUDY CASES
To ensure that the content of the study is as relevant and close to professional practice as possible, project assignments will often be based on authentic cases from companies.
The first 3 semesters (1½ year), the students must complete a compulsory work placement in a relevant company for the duration of at least 12-months.
Typical areas of work include control laboratories, research and development laboratories both in the manufacturing sector, and at universities and other research institutes.
Chemical and Biotechnical Analysts are usually sought after by:
- the foodstuffs industry,
- environmental companies,
- for product quality assurance,
- by the medical industry,
- for research at universities,
- for development projects in private companies.
As a chemical and biotechnical analyst you will be able to work with a variety of tasks. For example within:
- Food industry including breweries, dairies and abattoirs
- Pharmaceutical industry
- Chemical industry
- Textile, paint and plastics industry
- Colour and cosmetics industry
- Biotechnology companies
- Food safety authority or food research laboratories at a university

Pārsvarā lekcijas notiek grupās, rakstam atskaites par darbiem laboratorijā, ir kopīgi uzdevumi un daudz praktiskā darba laboratorijā.
Visi darbi laboratorijā ir ļoti aizraujoši, otrajā semestrī ir tādi interesanti darbi, kā vīna analīzes, gaļas analīzes, paracetamola sintēze, kā arī citi.
Protams, bez atgadījumiem laboratorijā neiztikt – vienreiz uzspridzinājām krānu, un vienreiz bijām tuvu īstam ugunsgrēkam, tā kā varu teikt, tas viennozīmīgi nav garlaicīgi. Visvairāk apbrīnoju pasniedzēju mierīgo attieksmi, tu vari droši strādāt patstāvīgi, un tev nekad neaizrādīs neparko.
